Umbuh-rella ella ella eh eh eh…

It’s still raining! But a lot warmer so it’s not so baaaad. This is for Virginie and her little card business. Now I’m considering making it a Threadless sumbission….for more $$$. Contract sez I can’t use it until after 6 months AFTER the contract is over in 6 months. If you understood that last sentence, that makes a year. Aww…

Ugh. That was a bad pun. I’m going to Seattle in a few hours for a good ol’ girly shopping trip. I’m thinking shoes, hopefully a cute pair of Nike Dunks or those lemony colored Vans with laces that I’ve been eying. Also, we’re going into the city so if the outlet fails to be a success (which I doubt), there’s always Goods in Capitol Hill for some sneakers or some design books from Peter Miller.

For this month’s desktop, I wanted to try the new/old trend with the vintage, geometric, rainbow gradient look. Thanks to PSDtuts for the cheat sheet. I added some bling cuz it’s no fun without some diamonds. I think I’m slightly blind now thanks to a month of hot pink April.

Step into my office

Now that I’m a freelance designer (who? me? gosh…) I get to live one of my fantasies of getting paid while sitting in bed.

Well, it’s more that just that. I have to do work work, which is fine since I like what I do. Sitting in front of the computer playing with Photoshop and Illustrator is a dream. This week, I’ve done 9 hours of work for Patrick and his TOP SECRET project (that’s why I haven’t posted any drafts or samples of this). It’s been a flurry of font tests, icon making and color swatches. Am I there yet? Possibly. One thing’s for sure, I now have $135! Giggles.

As for Virginie’s cards, shes going to send me a contract in the mail soon with a couple of my cards printed out. I’m going to do the cliche graphic designer picture of me holding up my work with my fingers and put it up on my portfolio. Oh yes.

And here’s a picture of me taking a call from a client in my office.

Who needs a digicam when you’ve got Photobooth?

So I’ve been going through my photobooth folder and I’ve decided to be a copycat and put it out for the world to see. Here’s a few of the events that went on this semester. It’s over, by the way. It’s over.

photo-28.jpg

That’s Paula pretending to write on our imaginary invention for IAT 333. It’s a tablet as our fake interface and she’s our fake mom writing an event on her digital calendar thing.

photo-35.jpg

This is Morgan on a sunny day in the hot tub. Why? It’s one of the few places on campus where they didn’t shut down the power. Why? They don’t want us studying in the study areas. Why? They’re fucktards. Check out Morgan’s Mac/PC!

photo-40.jpg

We also drink in school! Here’s wine tasting day! I couldn’t stay long because of work so I didn’t really participate…officially. There’s the wines with the bottle openers from Alessi. Guess who has the giant scar on his arm.

Derek and I ideating like the smart people that we are. We like to write to organize our thoughts and draw relationships between all the research that we do. Plus it makes us feel extra intelligent. Good thing this room has wall to wall whiteboard.

Here’s Manuel and I working on IAT 404. Manuel likes to procrastinate and he gets easily distracted. That’s why I quit.

This is what Manuel likes to do: make things pretty. Doesn’t it look super after Photoshop? This is the final prototype for our concept, Sustain-a-Stack. Derek and Manuel made the website. We made a glorified plant box with lights and watering controlled by a widget… but not really since it didn’t fully work. Whatever, the teachers love us.

photo-47.jpg

Nothing eventful here. My face just looks nice and my bangs are where they’re supposed to be. Say hi to Derek and Karen!

There you have it, me in school. I’m was there almost everyday more than I was at home. I go home to shower so those pictures with my hair down means I went home and those with my hair up means I didn’t. Gross huh?

All Nighters All Week

Finals week is finally here and as interaction design students, we don’t need to do exams. As a replacement, we get to do final projects or portfolios that sum up the whole design process of the entire semester. Woohoo. There’s 333 due tonight at midnight(tuesday), 404 due thursday, 391 presentation on friday and Italian exam on saturday.

I quit a long time ago. I’ve stopped to care. After I do my part, I stand back and watch. Not a very good thing to do but it’s already officially summer in my opinion. So today while waiting for Azmina and Paula to finish up the documents, I completed my mother’s day card. I took off the wings since Virginie was worried that they wouldn’t fit in 5×5. She was right.

It’s now 12:29am and Derek is still in front of me finishing off his own project. Poor Derek.

I can quit the coffee shop now

Yes, mom. I got the job.

Well, sort of. For Patrick’s consulting company, he wanted to hire someone to do branding and a whole functional community-based website thing. I wouldn’t be doing any of the coding but that kind of things was out of my league. Website-making is not my forte. He hired another guy for that job but he hired me too just for the branding stuff and logo. Yay? Yay!

We had a meeting yesterday (Sunday) at his super awesome office downtown on Richard’s Street, a block away from Waterfront station. The place was an old original building with exposed brick and old school radiator (the one that coils up like a snake). He furnished the place with Wassily chairs and other stuff from Yaletown Sofa and Koolhaus. Now I kinda wish that this job was an office job instead of a contract work-from-home deal. Boo. After the meeting we had a nice lunch at a sushi place which he paid for as a “business meeting”. Free meals are always more delicious.

mom draft

Virginie, a nice girl who wants to start her own card business, also let me do some of the designs. Totally up to me whether I want to do it. No pressure, which is nice. It’s not much pay but I didn’t really expect that anyway. So here’s what I’ve been working on for mother’s day. She wanted a tattoo style “I love mom” design since she saw the stuff I did for my website. Honestly, I’m getting a bit tired of those. I like cute, colorful, Tokidoki stuff. Whatev.

Happy April Fool’s Day!

If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when

Stuff I’ve done/thought recently:

  • My new desktop wallpaper!
  • I suck at making website layouts
  • Still fat (f*ck)
  • School stuff
  • New hot guy at school: Shawn Desmond (white guy, tall, shaved head, muscle-y, hotttt)
  • Looking for new sneakers
  • Saw Foo Fighters <3
  • Just came up from a game of DDR with Andrew at the mez
  • Need a haircut soon

ZZzzzz…

It’s week 12 of school and I’m losing interest.

Every semester at about this time, I have the “fuck it” mentality wherein I just don’t care anymore. I don’t go to all my classes, I sleep as soon as I get home (provided that I do go home that night), I’m late for meetings or I just don’t show up, I procrastinate more and leave everything to the last minute.

DP told me that blogs without pictures are boring. So here’s mine

Work?

Despite Derek’s constant warning to never get Craigslist jobs, I did. I was obsessed with finishing my website a few weeks ago and recently, I’ve been obsessed with Craigslist, refreshing the page every hour to see if I could find “graphic designer - vancouver”. I’ve always imagined myself working in a little downtown office, dance music blaring in the background with a dozen other 20-ish hottie designers like myself.

Anyway, I have an interview on Sunday for a starting web development company. I hope I get the job so I have some source of income during the summer before I leave for Italy. Confidence wise, I’m scared shitless. I’ve never had to show my work to a possible employer, and I don’t have much. Whatever is in my website is IT. The rest I don’t have on there is crap. This guy said that he really liked my style but he wants to see MORE. Shit.

Also, I’ve e-mailed this girl also from Craigslist and she wants to start a greeting card business with local artists and eco-friendly production. It won’t pay much but I see it as good practice for drawing. She seems to like my cutesy, simple work from the site so I guess I’ll be doing more of that in the near future. And the best part: I don’t need to change out of my pajamas for the job. HAH! Take that, Nicole!

In the process of finding a job, my sister hired me to work in the coffee shop she works in just because she felt sorry for unemployed me. Yes, I know I swore never to work in retail or in a coffee shop again but, hey, it’s money. And I need money. I kinda hate her for scheduling me on this long weekend since I wanted to go to the driving range after a year-long hiatus from golf. Ehhh… what can I do.

Wish me luck

About Me

I'm currently an Interaction Design undergrad at SFU living in Vancouver. This blog is about my 2008 Italia Field School trip; pre, during and post.

Why blog? For fun, for boring spans of time, and to show my mom in Manila where her money's going.

I like cooking pasta, playing DDR and boys. I don't like early morning classes, snow and celery.
